A softener company has one answer to “do I need one?” — yes. We don't sell softeners, so we can give you the answer the measured data supports, including the one sellers can't: if your water is soft, you almost certainly don't need one. A test will already read low; a softener would remove minerals that aren't causing you problems.
If your water is hard or very hard, the case is real and specific — and you should decide from your own county's measured number, not a national average. Nationally, the county median is 140 mg/L and about 56.8% of people in measured US counties live where water is hard or worse, so for most households the honest verdict does lean toward treatment. But “most” isn't “you”: look up your ZIP for your county's measured median, or scan the national map.

What actually decides it
- Your hardness band. Softening pays back mainly at hard and very-hard levels; in the moderately-hard middle it is optional; soft water needs none.
- Appliance stakes. Scale shortens the life of water heaters and fixtures; the harder the water, the larger that running cost, and the faster a softener pays for itself.
- Sodium and upkeep. Ion-exchange adds sodium to softened water and needs salt and occasional maintenance — a real trade-off for some households and diets.
- Iron and other issues. Wells more often carry iron, which changes both sizing and treatment; a softener handles only limited iron before dedicated iron treatment comes first.
City vs. well
Does city water change the answer?
Not by itself. Utilities disinfect and treat for safety, but most do not soften — city water can be just as hard as well water, and often is. The source doesn't decide it; your hardness number does, whether it arrives from a municipal main or a private well.
The practical difference is what else is in the water. City supplies are usually low in iron and come with a published hardness figure you can check; wells vary more and may carry iron that a softener only partly handles. Either way, start from the measured hardness, then account for iron.
Alternatives
If you don't soften: the honest alternatives
Ion-exchange softeners remove calcium and magnesium — the only method that lowers the hardness number. Salt-free conditioners (TAC) change how scale forms so it sticks less; they do not remove hardness, so a test still reads hard. Point-of-use reverse osmosis treats drinking water at one tap, not the whole house. Boiling precipitates only carbonate hardness — chemically real, but impractical at household scale.
Which to pick follows your goal. If the problem is scale and soap in the whole house and your water is genuinely hard, only ion-exchange moves the number. If you mainly want better drinking water, point-of-use RO is cheaper and adds no sodium. And if your water is soft to moderately hard, the honest answer is often to do nothing and re-test in a year.
How it works
How softening actually works
An ion-exchange softener runs your water through a bed of resin beads that hold sodium. Calcium and magnesium — the hardness — stick to the resin and release sodium in their place, so the water leaving the tank is soft. When the resin fills up, it regenerates: a salt brine rinse strips the hardness away and reloads the beads with sodium.
That mechanism is why the numbers on our tools matter. Grain capacity is how much hardness the resin holds before it must regenerate; the setting tells it how fast that happens; and salt is what each regeneration spends. Size it right and the tank quietly covers your week — size a softener, then set it and estimate its salt.

Signs you might already have the problem
You often don't need a test to suspect hard water. White scale on the kettle and showerhead, spots on glasses and the dishwasher, soap and shampoo that won't lather, and a filmy feel after a shower all point to dissolved calcium and magnesium. The harder the water, the faster these show up.
Those signs tell you hardness is present; they don't tell you the number, which is what decides the softener question. What a softener costs to run
Beyond the purchase, a softener spends three things: salt, a little water for each regeneration, and occasional resin upkeep. Salt is the main one — a typical household burns tens of pounds a month, which the salt calculator estimates from your hardness and household.
Notice the running cost scales with your hardness — harder water means more regenerations and more salt — which is the same thing that makes softening worthwhile in the first place. Efficient, demand-initiated settings keep it lean; oversized salt doses waste money for little extra capacity. None of this argues against softening genuinely hard water; it's the honest total you weigh against longer appliance life and easier cleaning.
