Hard water vs soft water
Hard or soft? You'll see the terms on filter boxes, in real-estate listings, and in every softener pitch — usually without a straight answer on the difference, or on which one you actually have.
The distinction is simple and measurable, and it changes what you'd do about your water — or whether you'd do anything at all.
Here's the real comparison: what each term means, the differences you can see and feel, the honest trade-offs both ways, and how to find out which is coming out of your tap.
The difference between hard and soft water is dissolved minerals: hard water carries calcium and magnesium, soft water carries little or none. Hard water leaves scale and fights soap; soft water lathers easily and feels slippery. Naturally soft water is mineral-poor from the start, while softened water has swapped its minerals for a little sodium.

What each term means
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium — the full definition, chemistry, and origin live on what water hardness is. Soft water carries little or none of those two minerals. That single difference — the minerals present or absent — drives everything you notice below. Everything else follows from it.

The differences you can see and feel
The differences all come down to how the water meets soap and heat. Hard water's calcium reacts with soap into a sticky curd — soap scum — so it fights lather and leaves film; soft water lathers with far less soap. After washing, hard water can feel “squeaky” while soft water feels slippery, because soft water rinses soap away completely instead of leaving a faint mineral-soap film.
Heat and evaporation drive the rest. Hard water leaves limescale on heaters and fixtures and spots on glassware as droplets dry and their minerals stay behind; soft water leaves essentially none. The scale shows up first where water gets hottest — inside the water heater and the kettle — because heat drives carbonate hardness out of solution fastest. Taste tracks minerals too: hard water carries more flavor, while very soft water tastes flatter. The table lays it out side by side.

Origin
Naturally soft vs softened
These are not the same water. Naturally soft water is mineral-poor from the source — rain-fed regions and granite country, where there is little calcium or magnesium to dissolve. Softened water started hard and had its calcium and magnesium removed by an ion-exchange softener. The end feel is similar; the chemistry that got there is opposite, and only softened water carries the added sodium below.
Trade-offs
The trade-offs, both ways
Hard water's cost is scale and soap. It shortens the efficient life of water heaters and fixtures, spots the dishes, and needs more soap for the same lather — an appliance-and-cleaning cost that grows with how hard the water is. Whether that's worth treating is a numbers question, not a reflex: weigh it with the do-I-need-a-softener guide, which routes off your measured hardness.
Soft water has its own trade-offs. Softened water carries a little added sodium from the ion-exchange swap. And water very low in minerals — naturally soft or softened — is missing the dissolved solids that tend to coat and protect pipe interiors, so it can be somewhat more corrosive to plumbing over time (Cleveland Water). These are trade-offs to weigh, not hazards — the comparison stays at the appliance-and-chemistry level.
Sodium
Does softening add salt to your water?
Ion-exchange softeners trade hardness minerals for sodium, so yes — a little. The amount is fixed by chemistry: removing one milligram per litre of hardness adds about 0.4594 mg of sodium (two sodium ions, 2 × 22.98977, replace one calcium-carbonate unit, 100.0869). Worked through: a very-hard 180 mg/L source, fully softened, gains about 83 mg/L of sodium — roughly 20 mg in an 8-oz glass. For scale, the US FDA's daily sodium guidance is 2,300 mg.

Not sure if your water is already softened? Look for a softener and a salt tank in the utility room, or a “soft” feel where the map says the incoming supply is hard — a lab or strip test settles it, reading the treated water soft even in a hard-water area.

Who prefers which — and why
For household cleaning and appliances, soft water is the easier ride: less soap, no scale, longer appliance life. Preferences run the other way too. Some people like the fuller taste of mineral-rich hard water and the fact that it adds no sodium. And specialty uses set their own targets entirely — aquariums and some plants want a specific hardness, a separate question from household comfort. There's no universally “better” water; there's the water you have, and what you want it to do.

Myths, corrected
- “Hard water clogs modern pipes.”
- The clogging horror stories come from the galvanized-steel era; scale still builds in water heaters and fixtures, but modern copper and plastic plumbing rarely blocks from hardness alone.
- “Rainwater is hard.”
- Backwards — rain starts essentially mineral-free and soft. It only becomes hard after soaking through mineral-rich ground.
- “Soft water cleans better.”
- Soft water lathers with far less soap, but the cleaning comes from the soap; with correct dosing, hard water cleans too — it just needs more soap and rinsing.
- “The slippery feel means soap is left behind.”
- The opposite — soft water rinses soap away completely; the slick feel is washing without the mineral-soap film that hard water leaves.

Is distilled or RO water hard or soft?

A note on pH
Softening barely moves pH — it swaps ions of equal charge, not acidity. Naturally soft water, though, often runs slightly acidic because it lacks the carbonate that buffers harder water, which is part of the corrosivity trade-off above.
