How to test water hardness

A Consumer Confidence Report is the water-quality summary every community utility must publish once a year; it reaches you with a bill or as a link, and it's free. To find yours, search “your utility name consumer confidence report” or check the utility's website. Look for the line labeled hardness or calcium carbonate — that's your number, usually in mg/L (the same as ppm). Not every report lists it (how to find and read yours), which is exactly the gap the measured map fills.
On a private well? A CCR won't help — no utility reports your water. Start with your county's measured median from the lookup, then see well water hardness for what to test.

Know what to expect before you test
Most US tap water tests hard. The national county median is 140 mg/L as CaCO₃ — squarely “hard” on the USGS scale — and about 56.8% of people in measured counties live where the water is hard or worse. So a hard result is the common case, not a surprise. Where you live sets a strong expectation: state medians run from South Dakota's 391.4 mg/L down to Maine's 16.3, with the Plains, Upper Midwest, and Southwest highest and New England and the sandy Southeast softest. Look up your county first, then test to confirm.
Two units cover almost every result. ppm (parts per million) is the same number as mg/L as CaCO₃ — the unit this whole site uses. Home strips and drop kits often report grains per gallon (gpg) instead; to compare, divide mg/L by 17.118 (so 140 mg/L ≈ 8.2 gpg). The converter does it either way.

Standard strips step straight from 50 to 120 ppm — the moderately-hard band (61–120) has no mark of its own, so genuinely moderately-hard water shows as one or the other. The lookup or a drop kit resolves it. The soap-bottle screen is described on the signs of hard water page.
Which one should you use? For most people the answer is the free lookup plus one budget strip — enough to know your band and roughly where you sit. Step up to a drop-titration kit (which counts reagent drops until the color turns, giving a sharper number than a strip) when you're sizing or tuning a softener and a rough band isn't precise enough. Reach for a certified lab only when you need documentation someone else will rely on — a home sale, a dispute, or a health question. A TDS meter isn't on this ladder: it measures dissolved solids, not hardness.

Step by step
Step by step: test strips at home
- Flush. Run the cold kitchen tap for about 30 seconds to clear water that has been standing in the pipes.
- Fill. Collect tap water in a clean cup, or dip directly under the stream if your kit allows.
- Dip. Submerge the strip for the time your kit specifies — usually a second or two.
- Wait. Hold it level and wait the kit's development time, often about 15 to 60 seconds.
- Compare. Match the pad color to your kit's chart to read the value, then interpret it in the widget above.
Always test cold water from the kitchen tap, and check the strip's expiry date — expired strips read wrong.
Drop kits
Drop-titration kits
A drop kit adds a reagent to a water sample one drop at a time until the color changes; the drop count is your hardness. Many drop-titration kits are calibrated so that one drop equals one grain per gallon — a common convention, not a universal one, so check your kit's card.
TDS meters
A note on digital “TDS meters”
The inexpensive pocket meters sold for water testing measure electrical conductivity and report it as total dissolved solids (TDS) — the sum of all dissolved ions, not calcium and magnesium specifically. TDS is not hardness. Water can be high in TDS yet soft, or moderate in TDS yet hard, depending on which ions dominate. Consumer TDS meters read electrical conductivity and multiply by a conversion factor — an estimate, not a gravimetric (dried-and-weighed) measurement. When you need a precise, documented number — verifying a treatment system, or a dispute — a certified drinking-water lab is the reference. Many state programs list certified labs through the EPA's certification directory.
