Water softener salt calculator

How much salt a softener really burns depends on your water and household — not the calendar. Estimate your monthly regenerations, pounds of salt, and 40-lb bags, and see why lean settings save money.

Water softener salt calculator

Estimate monthly regenerations, salt use, and 40-lb bags from your hardness and household.

Standard softener sizes run 24,000–80,000 grains.

Your water's hardness in grains per gallon (gpg), ppm, or mg/L.

Don't know it? Use your area's measured median:

Typically none in treated city water; iron is mainly a well-water issue. Well users: enter your test value. Iron in well water →

Manufacturer manuals and trade guides vary (commonly 3–5); verify yours.

How much salt a softener uses depends on your hardness, household size, and how often it regenerates — not the calendar. The calculator below estimates regenerations per month, salt per month in pounds, and 40-pound bags. Higher salt doses buy less extra capacity than expected, so efficient settings save salt.

Regeneration is the rinse cycle where the softener flushes captured calcium and magnesium off its resin with salt brine and resets its capacity. Your salt use is really just how often that happens times the salt per rinse — which is all the calculator works out.

Reading the result

How to read your result

The estimate walks a simple chain: your daily grain load (people × gallons × hardness) against your tank's capacity gives regenerations per month, and each regeneration uses the salt dose you set — multiply and you have pounds per month, then 40-lb bags. Change the salt-per-regen field to match your own unit's label and the whole estimate updates.

The number that surprises people is frequency. A softener doesn't regenerate on a schedule you pick — it regenerates when the resin is used up, so hardness and household size drive salt use far more than any timer setting. The table below shows the pattern.

Frequency

How often should it regenerate?

Two schemes exist. Demand-initiated softeners regenerate when the resin is actually used up, metered by water volume — the efficient default. Timer softeners regenerate every N days no matter what, wasting salt in low-use weeks and risking hard breakthrough in high-use ones. “Every N days” is therefore an outcome of your grain load and capacity, not a setting to copy — which is what the calculator estimates.

The resin trades hardness ions (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺) for sodium (Na⁺); regeneration recharges it with salt.

Efficiency

Salt dose and efficiency

A larger salt dose per regeneration buys less extra capacity than proportionally — the resin's capacity-per-pound falls as the dose rises. That is the same fact behind rated vs. usable capacity: efficient, smaller doses recover most of the capacity for far less salt, so running lean saves money without much loss.

Running lean, in practice. If your softener is demand-initiated, it already regenerates only when the resin is spent — the efficient default. You can go further by lowering the salt dose toward the resin's efficient range: you give up a little capacity but save disproportionately on salt. Timer softeners can't do this as well, since they regenerate on a fixed schedule no matter the use. When in doubt, set the salt-per-regen field above to your unit's label and watch the monthly trade update.

Questions

Frequently asked

How much salt does a water softener use per month?
It depends on hardness, household size, and how often it regenerates — the calculator estimates pounds and 40-pound bags per month from your numbers.
How often should a water softener regenerate?
Efficient softeners regenerate on demand, when capacity is used up, rather than on a fixed timer — how many days that takes depends on your grain load.
How much salt should be in the brine tank?
By common convention, keep salt above the water line and roughly the tank half-full; refill before it drops below a few inches of salt.
