What is water hardness?
You've heard your water called “hard,” seen the white crust on the kettle, and wondered what the word actually means — and whether it's a problem.
It's a precise, measurable thing, not a vague complaint: a number you can look up, compare, and act on. Knowing it explains the scale, the spotting, and the extra soap, and tells you whether treatment is even worth considering.

Water hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in your water, measured in milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate. It comes from rain seeping through limestone and other minerals, which dissolve into the groundwater. The more it picks up, the harder the water — and the more scale, spotting, and soap trouble you see.
Definition
Calcium, magnesium, and the CaCO₃ convention
Hardness is the concentration of dissolved calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) — the two minerals present in enough quantity to matter. Other ions ride along, but these two define the number.
By long convention, hardness is reported “as calcium carbonate” (CaCO₃): rather than list calcium and magnesium separately, the standard converts both to the equivalent amount of calcium carbonate and adds them. That's why one figure in mg/L can stand in for a mix of minerals — every unit pretends the whole load is calcium carbonate, so numbers stay comparable across labs and countries. On the hardness scale, that single figure sorts water into soft, moderately hard, hard, and very hard.
Origin
Where it comes from
Rain starts essentially mineral-free. It's naturally slightly acidic — it absorbs carbon dioxide to form weak carbonic acid — and as it percolates down through soil and rock, that mild acid dissolves minerals out of the ground (USGS Water Science School).
Where it passes through limestone, dolomite, and gypsum, it picks up calcium and magnesium: CaCO₃ + CO₂ + H₂O → Ca²⁺ + 2HCO₃⁻. The longer the contact and the more soluble the rock, the harder the water. Regions built on these carbonate rocks — much of the central and western US — yield hard groundwater; granite and sandstone country stays soft. It's the ground, not the tap, that sets your number.

Is calcium carbonate soluble?
Barely — and that's the whole trick. Pure calcium carbonate hardly dissolves in plain water. But rainwater isn't plain: the dissolved carbon dioxide makes it mildly acidic, and that acid converts the rock into calcium bicarbonate, which is soluble. So the mineral rides along dissolved only as long as the water stays charged with CO₂.
Reverse the conditions — let the CO₂ escape, or add heat — and the reaction runs backwards: the bicarbonate drops back to insoluble calcium carbonate. That's the white scale in your kettle and the crust on a faucet. In other words, “CaCO₃ in water” is really calcium bicarbonate in transit, and scale is that same carbonate coming back out of solution.
Types
Temporary vs permanent hardness
Temporary (carbonate) hardness is calcium and magnesium paired with bicarbonate. Heat drives it out of solution as solid scale — which is exactly why the kettle and the water heater fur up first, and why boiling can precipitate it (Britannica).
Permanent (non-carbonate) hardness is calcium and magnesium paired with sulfates and chlorides; it stays dissolved when boiled. So boiling removes only the temporary part — chemically real, but impractical at household scale and no help against the permanent fraction. Most tap water is a mix of the two.

How hardness is calculated
The standard formula (Standard Methods 2340B) converts each mineral to its calcium-carbonate equivalent and adds them: hardness = 2.497 × calcium + 4.118 × magnesium (both in mg/L). The two constants are just molar-mass ratios — how much calcium carbonate each element “weighs like.”
Across measured US samples, calcium typically supplies roughly 68% — about two-thirds — of total hardness, magnesium the rest. That's why hardness is often loosely called “the calcium in your water,” though magnesium always rides along.
That share is computed from the median calcium and magnesium of each state's measured samples, converted to CaCO₃ (2.497× and 4.118×) and weighted by result count.
Thresholds
How hard is “hard”? The units and thresholds
The USGS sorts that single mg/L figure into four bands: soft below 60, moderately hard 60–120, hard 120–180, and very hard above 180 mg/L as CaCO₃. The same value in grains per gallon — the unit US softeners use — is just mg/L ÷ 17.118, so 120 mg/L is about 7 gpg.

Geography
Where hard water actually is
Hardness isn't spread evenly. Of the 2,977 US counties with enough data to map, 862 test soft, 474 moderately hard, 393 hard, and 1,248 very hard — and about 56.8% of people in measured counties live where water is hard or worse.

What hardness does at home
Hardness shows up as limescale on fixtures and inside water heaters, spotting and film on glassware, more soap for the same lather, and gradual efficiency loss in appliances. It's an aesthetic and appliance matter — its US limit is a secondary (aesthetic) standard, not a health-based one.
Each effect traces back to the same two minerals. Soap scum forms because calcium reacts with soap into an insoluble, sticky film, so you add more soap to get a lather. Scale is the carbonate coming out of solution on hot surfaces; inside a water heater it acts like insulation on the element, so the appliance works harder for the same hot water and wears sooner. Spots are simply the dissolved minerals left behind when a droplet evaporates. The harder the water, the faster each of these appears.
