How to tell if you have hard water
Hard water announces itself: white mineral deposits on faucets and shower glass, soap that resists lathering, spotted dishes, stiff laundry, and scale in kettles. Why hard water leaves marks
Hard water starts as soft rain. As it soaks through the ground it dissolves calcium and magnesium out of limestone and dolomite — carbonate rocks — and carries that mineral load to your tap. Those two dissolved minerals are all “hardness” means (more on what water hardness is).
The minerals stay invisible while the water is liquid. But evaporation and heat drive them back out of the water as solid scale — the chalky, off-white mineral crust hard water leaves behind. So marks appear wherever water dries or warms: a white spot where a drop evaporated, a crust inside the kettle, grit around the aerator (the small screen where water leaves the tap), or soap scum, where calcium reacts with soap into a sticky, insoluble film. Of the 2,977 US counties with enough data to map, 862 test soft, 474 moderately hard, 393 hard, and 1,248 very hard — most read hard or harder on the USGS hardness scale. About 127.9 million people live in the very-hard counties alone. The pattern is regional: all ten of the hardest state medians, led by South Dakota at 391.4 mg/L, sit in the Plains, Upper Midwest, and Southwest — where groundwater moves through limestone and dolomite — while New England's granite and the sandy Southeast coast run softest.
Signs
The signs, one by one
- White mineral deposits and stains. The clearest sign is a chalky white crust where water sits or dries — around faucet aerators, on showerheads, at the base of taps, and as a cloudy film on shower glass. It is calcium and magnesium left behind as water evaporates (limescale). Possible at moderately hard, common at hard, and pronounced — back within days of cleaning — at very hard.
- Soap and detergent that won't lather. Hard water reacts with soap so it foams poorly and leaves a sticky film (soap scum) on tubs, tiles, and glass that resists rinsing; you reach for more soap or detergent to get the same lather. Possible at moderately hard, common at hard, pronounced at very hard.
- Spotted or cloudy dishes and glassware. Glasses come out with white spots or a haze that wipes off when dry — deposits, not dirty dishes. Worth distinguishing: spots and film that rub away are hard-water deposits, while permanent cloudiness that won't wipe off is etching, a separate issue often tied to too little detergent or very soft water. Possible at moderately hard, common at hard, pronounced at very hard.
- Stiff, dull laundry. Fabrics can feel scratchy or stiff and look dull over time as minerals deposit in the fibers and keep detergent from rinsing clean. Typically absent at moderately hard, possible at hard, common at very hard.
- Scale in kettles and coffee makers. A white, flaky crust builds inside kettles, coffee makers, and pots — the same limescale, accelerated by heat, which drives off carbon dioxide and forces the minerals out of solution faster than plain evaporation. Common from moderately hard upward, and pronounced at very hard; descaling helps only until it returns.
- Weak or uneven flow at aerators and showerheads. Scale narrows the small openings in faucet aerators and showerheads, so flow weakens or sprays sideways; unscrewing an aerator often reveals white grit. Typically absent at moderately hard, possible at hard, common at very hard.
- A water heater working harder — or making noise. Scale on heating elements and the tank bottom makes a water heater slower to recover and less efficient, and can cause rumbling or popping as water boils under the deposit layer. Typically absent at moderately hard, possible at hard, common at very hard.

Half-fill a clear bottle with tap water, add a few drops of plain liquid soap, cap it, and shake hard for a few seconds. Lots of suds over clear water suggests softer water; weak suds over cloudy, filmy water suggests it is harder.

A few common complaints look like hard water but aren't — treating them as hardness won't fix them:
