On a private well, there's no utility report to tell you how hard your water is — and well water tends to run harder than the city supply down the road.
That's not a guess: across measured US samples, groundwater runs meaningfully harder than surface water, because it sits in the rock and reaches your tap unblended and untreated.

Well water is often harder than city water because it moves slowly through mineral-rich rock with no municipal blending or treatment to even it out. Why
Why wells run harder
Contact time. Water in an aquifer sits against rock for years, dissolving far more calcium and magnesium than fast-moving surface water ever picks up (USGS Water Science School). The longer the water lingers and the more soluble the rock, the harder it gets.
No blending or treatment. A city utility mixes sources and often treats to even out the water; a private well delivers the aquifer straight to your tap, whatever it happens to hold. Aquifer chemistry varies — carbonate rock yields hard water, crystalline rock and clean sands stay soft — so the ground under you sets the range, not the county line.
Depth and recharge tune it further. Deeper water has usually spent longer underground and picks up more mineral, while a shallow well fed by recent rainfall can read softer — which is one reason two wells a street apart can differ. The one constant is that the well is a copy of its aquifer, not of the treated water a neighbor on city service drinks.

How hard is well water, typically?
There's no single well number — but the measured data gives a strong prior. Across states, the median groundwater hardness sits around 152 mg/L, well into “hard,” versus about 89 mg/L for surface water. So the honest expectation for a well is hard water, and often harder than that if you're on carbonate rock.
“Typically” still isn't “you,” though. Wells vary far more than city supplies because nothing blends them, so the range around that median is wide. Treat the figure as the number to expect before you measure — then confirm it, which the playbook below walks through.
The hardness itself is the same two minerals as anywhere: dissolved calcium and magnesium the water pulled from the rock (the full chemistry lives on what water hardness is). What's different about a well is concentration — with no treatment step in between, whatever the aquifer holds arrives at full strength, which is why well water so often reads harder and why iron tends to ride along with it.

City customers get a utility report; well owners don't. But you're not flying blind — your county has a measured median from the same monitoring data behind this whole site, and it's the best free starting estimate you have.
The playbook: first, look up your ZIP to read your county's measured median. That's a county-level figure — the most local measured value available, not a ZIP-specific reading of your particular well. Then confirm your own tap, because well chemistry is local: a test strip or lab test turns the county estimate into your actual number. Estimate first, measure second.
Reading the result is simple: your number lands in a band on the hardness scale — soft, moderately hard, hard, or very hard — and that band, not the raw figure, is what decides whether treatment is worth a thought. If your well tests soft, you're done; if it tests hard or worse and scale is a nuisance, the softener pages below take it from there. A county already flagged hard on the map is a good reason to test sooner rather than later.
Iron
Wells often carry iron too
Hardness and iron travel together in groundwater more often than in surface supplies — the same airless underground conditions that let a well pick up dissolved iron also mean nothing has removed it before it reaches you. Iron changes both what you test and how you'd treat the water. If you see orange staining, a metallic taste, or rust flecks, that's a separate measurement — read iron in well water for the three types and what treats each. Treatment
Softening a well
Sizing a softener for well water needs the iron number too, because a softener handles only limited iron — up to about 2 ppm of dissolved ferrous iron, which is added to the hardness setting at roughly 5 grains per ppm. Above that, dedicated iron treatment comes first.

Two wells on the same road can differ — different depth, sometimes a different aquifer, different chemistry. There is no single well number for an area, which is why measuring your own tap beats any regional average, and why the county median is a starting estimate, not a verdict.
