To size a water softener, multiply your household's daily water use by your hardness in grains per gallon (plus an iron allowance), then by the days between regenerations — that is the grain capacity you need. The calculator below does this and rounds up to the next standard size; a family of four at 18 grains needs about 48,000 grains.

A softener's grain capacity is how much hardness it can strip from your water before it has to recharge — its working budget, measured in grains. A bigger household or harder water spends that budget faster, so you need a larger number. Sizing is just estimating your weekly spend and picking a tank that covers it.

How to read your result

The calculator shows the weekly grain load — your daily hardness removal times seven days — then rounds up to the next tank on the standard ladder (24k, 32k, 40k, 48k, 64k, 80k). We size for a weekly regeneration, the common default, so the tank carries a full week between recharges rather than cycling daily.

Rounding up is deliberate. A tank rated exactly at your weekly load would finish the week with nothing to spare, and its usable capacity is lower than the nameplate anyway. The next size up buys headroom for a heavy week — guests, a full laundry day — without a meaningful cost jump.

Capacity

Rated vs. usable capacity

A softener's nameplate grain rating assumes the maximum salt dose. Run at salt-efficient settings and the usable capacity is roughly a third lower — a standard property of ion-exchange resin. That gap is why this calculator rounds up to the next standard size, and it's the flip side of the salt-efficiency trade-off.

Worked example

A worked example

Take a family of 4 at 15 gpg — moderately hard, no iron. Daily removal is 82 gallons × 4 people × 15 gpg = 4,920 grains a day. Over a week that's 34,440 grains, which rounds up to a 40,000-grain tank.

Notice the tank is bigger than one week's raw load — that's the rounding headroom, and it's why two households at the same hardness can land on the same tank even with different weekly totals. Change any input in the calculator to see your own figure.

Trade-off

Undersizing vs. oversizing, honestly

Undersize and the resin exhausts before the next regeneration, so hard water breaks through at the end of each cycle — you feel it as scale creeping back and soap that stops lathering. The unit also regenerates more often, which burns more salt and shortens resin life.

Oversize and the penalty is milder but real: you pay more up front, and a tank that regenerates too seldom can let resin sit saturated between cycles. The sweet spot is the smallest standard tank that covers a full week with headroom — exactly what rounding up to the ladder gives you. Bigger is not safer past that point.

Softeners typically handle up to about 2 ppm of dissolved (ferrous) iron; above that, dedicated iron treatment usually comes first. Each ppm of iron is added to hardness through the compensation factor before sizing.

At about 18 grains per gallon, a family of four needs roughly 41,000 grains a week, so a 48,000-grain unit is the usual standard size after rounding up.
Does flow rate matter for sizing?
It matters for the valve, not the grain capacity — very high simultaneous demand can need a larger control valve, but capacity is set by weekly grains.
